It was the bottled perfection of a Livermore Valley wine that, in 1889, claimed America's first international wine gold medal in France and put California on the world wine map. With the region's first commercial vines planted in the 1840s, this is one of the oldest pockets of wine producing real estate in the United States. In fact Livermore's Wente Vineyards is the longest continuously operated family owned winery in California and today, nearly 80 percent of all Chardonnay planted in California is derived from the Wente clone.
